"Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you."
Today's popular culture continues to deceive men and women that the only way out of a difficult situation is abortion.... that the only solution to an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy is to end it.
Every year, there are about fifty-five million abortions worldwide. How many is that? It means that around the world, 150,685 children are killed by abortion every day. Every hour, 6,278 children are killed. Every minute, 105 are exterminated. The numbers for the United States are smaller in magnitude but not in significance. Every year, 1.6 million unborn children are denied the right to life. Broken down by days, that means 4,383; per hour, that is 183; and it means 3 per minute. By the turn of the century we will have killed thirty times more children through abortion than the number of Americans lost in all of our nation's wars -- from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War. (Transforming America from the Inside Out by Kay Coles James, Zondervan Publishing House, 1995)
No matter what statistic you read, it's too many.
The abortion debate isn't merely about the question of whether a woman be able to make her own choices, despite what the Pro-Choice side would have you believe. The real issue in this debate is how we view the value and dignity of human life. Is it a gift from God to be held in awe and reverence? Or is it a product of an intensely personal biological function with no real meaning? .....If we believe that life is more than happenstance, that life is a gift of a holy and sovereign God, then we must treat it as a holy and sacred gift, one to be revered, not compromised. (Ibid)
God's word makes it clear: Abortion destroys a human life. Abortion is murder and God prohibits murder under the severest of penalties. Exodus 21:22-25 tells us that abortion is a criminal offense. If a woman with child was harmed so that she miscarried, the punishment for the offender was the death penalty.
We need to take very seriously as Christians and as a nation, the seriousness of abortion and how it grieves God's heart. You can make a difference in the fight against abortion. Some things you can do are:
1. Inform yourself of the issues. Some websites you can check out are: www.lifeissues.org and http://www.nrlc.org/ and http://www.ifrl-pac.com/
2. Help out your local crisis pregnancy center by financial support, prayer, or volunteering your time. The address of our local center is: Rockford Area Pregnancy Care Center, 2501 Broadway, Rockford, IL 61108- 5752, (815)398-5444. Their website is: http://www.rapcc.com To learn more about crisis pregnancy centers visit: www.care-net.org
3. Be a sidewalk missionary at your local abortion clinic. Your voice may be the last message of hope these young men and women may hear as they approach the clinic. Our local abortion mill is the Northern Illinois Woman's Center, 1400 Broadway, Rockford, IL 61108. Abortions are performed there every Tuesday and Friday mornings so that is the key time to do sidewalk evangelism.
